Elaine Tajima oversees the vision and direction for the marketing and design studio Tajima Creative, where she heads a management team of creative talent and strategists who approach marketing challenges from the inside out. Before starting Tajima Creative out of her living room in 1996, Elaine worked as creative director for leading retailers such as May Department Stores, Liz Claiborne, Target, and Mervyn’s. Elaine’s track record of retail visual merchandising excellence was instrumental in helping Tajima Creative’s client Washington Mutual conceive and execute a national retail strategy that helped the bank become one of the country’s leading financial retailers. Elaine was chosen by Graphic Design: USA magazine as one of 2003’s “People to Watch,” and her approach to retaining the industry’s best and brightest people earned her recognition as one of the nation’s “Best Bosses” of 2004 by Fortune Small Business Magazine. A board member of the Palo Alto Arts Center and Women Beyond Borders, Elaine is a believer in maintaining a balance of socially responsible clients along with the company’s core roster of corporate clients. She and Tajima Creative have been cited by Fast Company for implementing a profit-driven business strategy that is dedicated to converting a significant percentage of its billings to clients who are committed to a socially responsible business platform.
