About Gary Erickson & Kit Crawford
Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford are co-owners of Clif Bar & Company (www.clifbar.com), the nation’s leading maker of all-natural, organic energy and nutrition foods and drinks. As the owners of a privately-held company, they developed an innovative business model that integrates social and environmental responsibility into every area of the business. Clif Bar & Company has not only achieved success in business – with a 10 year compounded annual growth rate of 23 percent – it has also garnered national acclaim for its commitment to the environment, support for important causes such as the fight against breast cancer, and nurturing employees. Health Magazine has named Clif Bar & Company the “Healthiest Company for Women to Work For” in the U.S., Fortune Small Business has added Gary to its list of “Best Bosses in America” and Kit has been honored by the East Bay Business Times as one of the East Bay’s “Women of Distinction.” Four years ago, Kit and Gary turned down a $120 million opportunity to sell their thriving business and instead followed their hearts, and became the sole shareholders in the company they created. They also purchased 80 acres of farmland in Napa, CA and began work on a new venture, the Clif Bar Family Winery & Farm. Founded in 2004, the winery now releases approximately 10,000 cases each year with distribution in select U.S. markets. Gary is also the author of Raising the Bar: Integrity and Passion in Life and Business: The Story of Clif Bar, Inc.: A Journey Toward Sustaining Your Business, Brand, People, Community, and the Planet (www.josseybass.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0787986712.html), in which he shares Clif Bar’s unique approach to business.
About Gary Hirshberg
Gary Hirshberg (www.stonyfield.com/stirringitup/about.html) serves as Chairman, President and CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm and is the author of Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World (www.stonyfield.com/stirringitup). The husband of writer Meg Hirshberg, and the father of three teenage yogurt-eaters, Gary Hirshberg has overseen the growth of the organic yogurt company, Stonyfield Farm, from its infancy as a seven-cow organic farming school in 1983 to a $300 million-per-year business. They achieved this growth using innovative marketing techniques that often combine the social, environmental, and financial missions of the company. One of the company's five missions is "to serve as a model that environmentally and socially responsible businesses can also be profitable" and Gary has realized this vision in every aspect of the company. Gary has received six honorary doctorates and serves on several corporate and non-profit boards including those of Homegrown Naturals, Honest Tea, and O'Naturals, a new chain of natural fast food restaurants he co-founded. He co-chaired The Social Venture Network for five years and is the founder of the Social Venture Institute, a "boot camp" for community-minded entrepreneurs. Gary has won numerous awards for corporate and environmental leadership including: the 1999 Global Green USA's Green Cross Millennium Award (inspired by Mikhail S. Gorbachev) for Corporate Environmental Leadership. Gary was named "Business Leader of the Year" by Business NH Magazine and "New Hampshire's 1998 Small Business Person of the Year" by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
